Hains: A New Initiative and Rookie Camp
Today the Habs announced a new initiative called Respect and Consent and the rookies reported to Brossard for training camp. - Karine Hains
Ramage was also asked about the organization’s approach to development following the “Kotkaniemi departure” and mentioned that Ducharme had met the rookies yesterday and had explained how important it is for young players to be able to self-evaluate. Furthermore, Ramage added that he tells all of his young players that the guy behind the bench is the one who controls your ice time so you might want to listen to him and do what he says, a clear reference to Kotkaniemi rolling his eyes at Claude Julien.
.... and there you have it. |

Kid found guilty of sex crimes.... DRAFT HIM!
Other kid maybe rolls eyes at coach, maybe out of context... Bench him, try to offer under market value on a contract, let him via go offer sheet, he was never good anyways, wasted pick! |

gotta say I hadn't really noticed any "attitude problems" with KK, but with all things considered there were a lot of signs indicating that an extra year of development in Finland or with the Rocket could've been beneficial. it was probably smooth sailing at first but then there were certain frustrations that progressively appeared between him and the coaching staff.

told you Pat, I didn't like his 4 fingers when he scored in the playoffs. at the time I found it looked weird.
you don't bench a player for no reason. you tell them what to do. you practice, you show them videos, you repeat again and again... especially with a 3rd overall. if you finally bench him, it's because you have a damn good reason.
same reason why you do not match the offer. |

You bring a young kid from Europe, never played in the NHL or smaller rinks, was playing OK in the Finnish league but not dominating, throw him in the NHL and put the onus on him to figure it out.
Rather than bring him to camp. give him a feel for it, send him back, let him get better at his position, more mature - mentally and physically - then bring him back.
I get the kid was frustrated.
I get he probably had different expectations than the organization was giving him.
I do not think it helped that what the organization was saying externally did not help what they were saying internally.
Maybe KK never becomes more than he currently is (same for Galchenyuk), but it is clear the Habs did not set these kids up for success or even learn from the Galchenyuk failures when they got KK. |

bad pick in a scrutinized market such as MTL, but at the same time the whole cancel culture thing is ridiculous, either you believe in someone's ability to redeem himself, or they should be exiled from society for life. |

Well, 2 weeks of PR from his agent didn't fix that for me, but whatever.... not going over all that again.

oh it isn't "fixed" for sure, and it was handled rather poorly, but I hope people won't be hanging on to this forever. |

let's hope they don't mess things up with Caulfield, although that sounds a bit more improbable considering how natural everything seems to be for him

after scoring, he pointed 4 fingers to the other 3 kids still benched (him being the 4th) meaning we'll stick together the 4 of us.

ahh I see, thanks, I think I had missed that. not sure if it was simply a gesture of solidarity, but I get what you're saying. |

ben voilà. how about realizing that players themselves have a lot to say on their own development, probably a lot more than the coach or the organization. |

not entirely impossible but I doubt it went that far... anyway, he's gone now, kinda sad but perhaps it was best for everyone. |

on LW, with a team known for working hard. Brindamour won't give him an free pass. |

I have the impression that if KK had stayed Ducharme would have eventually gotten his message across with him, but yeah perhaps this change of scenery will give him the wake up call he needed. |
